Deshkan Ziibiing means 'at the river called Horn or Antler River' in Ojibwe, a First Nation language of the Great Lakes region. Deshkan Ziibiing is the original name for our community of Chippewas of the Thames First Nation. The term 'unceded' when used in a First Nation or Original Peoples context refers to those lands never surrendered or ceded to another sovereign which means this location in southwestern Ontario, beside a river (referred to on Canadian maps as Thames river), in the history of the land here on Turtle Island - is as it has always been - cared for, stewarded over, by Anishinaabe Ojibwe with no claim over it by a foreign sovereign. The tee when worn can be a history lesson, place name, political statement, reconciliation message, environmental mission... you decide.
